TRAVEL TO NEW YORK AND SAN FRANCISCO VIA WONDERFUL CHILDREN'S CLASSICS!

New York City's bustle, charm, and unique spirit have never been more beautifully and whimsically created for children than in Miroslav Sasek's THIS IS NEW YORK. First published in 1960, Sasek's vision of New York is as evocative and fresh today as it was when he first put brush to paper: the glittering lights of Times Square, ethnic grocery stores filled with temptingly unfamiliar foods, awe-inspiring sky-scrapers, and more. Sasek captured the essence of New York in a way that will delight children and parents, many of whom will enthusiastically remember the book from their own childhood.

Also pubbing is Sasek's equally delightful THIS IS SAN FRANCISCO, replete with illustrations of Peking ducks in Chinatown, Lombard Street - the crookedest in the world, and a bird's eye view of colorful cars dotting the Golden Gate Bridge. Sasek captures both the breathtaking landscape and the cosmopolitan flavor of the city by the bay in THIS IS SAN FRANCISCO, first published in 1962, and back to dazzle kids and adults alike.

THIS IS NEW YORK and THIS IS SAN FRANCISCO will be true to the originals, with judicious and subtle statistical updates in the back of the books, such as revised populations, numbers of elevators, and the like.

These two energetic and entertaining books are the latest offerings from Universe Publishing's classic books for children, following the 2002 success of Munro Leaf's 1946 How to Behave.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Author and illustrator Miroslav Sasek was born on November 18, 1916, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. After a three-week vacation in Paris, Sasek was inspired to begin a series of illustrated travel guides for children. His beloved "This Is" series-starting with This Is Paris, This Is London, and This Is Rome in 1959-reached international critical and popular acclaim. Sasek continued the series with more than a dozen books that traveled to numerous European and American cities, states, nations, and points of interest. This Is London and This Is New York were both recipients of the New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book of the Year award, in 1959 and 1960, respectively. This Is New York was also the recipient of the Boys' Club of America Junior Book Award. Miroslav Sasek died in May 1980 at the age of 63.
