Books for Young Children: This Is Edinburgh and This Is Munich

The large, striking picture books by M. Sasek have been most popular with adults. Children can share them, but the text certainly does little to introduce a city to a child who has not seen it...[This is Munich is] a bit over-crowded by churches and beer halls. Have you ever watched the faces of children as the famous clock strikes an evening hour and the Munich Child comes slowly out, carrying his lantern? Now the city fathers apparently prefer to picture him with a beer stein in one hand, a radish in the other. M. Sasek might watch children a little more closely on his future trips to cities, because he could give them so much.

Text from Alice Dalgliesh, Books for Young Children: This Is Edinburgh and This Is Munich in Saturday Review, Vol. xliv, No. 29, July 22, 1961, p. 37.
