Children and Books (1964)
Other Cities and Countries
Miroslav Sasek has written and illustrated several charming books which show the landmarks and the people of foreign cities. This Is Paris, This Is Munich, This Is Rome, and This Is Venice are a few of the titles. This Is Rome, for example, is as informative as an Italian travel book and as gay as a Roman holiday. Through his stylized paintings of characteristic scenes of Rome, with photographs of Roman statuary embedded in some of them, and his accompanying text, Sasek does a superb job of presenting the Eternal City as it might appear to a young tourist -- as a kaliedoscopic array of strange and fascinating sights with its gaily garbed theological students, whizzing Vespas, imposing relics of anitquity, all of the things which make Rome like no other city in the world. Each of Sasek's books is a distinct contribution to children's knowledge and understanding of people and places
